Biography:
Mil Máscaras, born Aaron Rodríguez Arellano on July 15, 1942, is a legendary Mexican luchador (professional wrestler) known for his masked persona and significant contributions to the sport, particularly in international arenas.
He began his wrestling career in 1965 and quickly gained popularity for his athleticism and distinctive array of colorful masks, refusing to unmask throughout his career, maintaining kayfabe (the portrayal of staged events as real) rigorously.
Máscaras achieved considerable success in Mexico, becoming a major star in promotions like EMLL (Empresa Mexicana de Lucha Libre). His appeal transcended borders, making him a pioneer in popularizing lucha libre in Japan and the United States, particularly in the World Wrestling Federation (WWF). He was one of the first masked wrestlers to be featured prominently on major American wrestling shows.
Beyond wrestling, Máscaras starred in a series of lucha films, further cementing his iconic status. Though his in-ring style has occasionally drawn criticism for its stiffness, his impact on professional wrestling as a cultural icon and international ambassador is undeniable.
